Rogue River Blue
(Cow's milk, Rogue Creamery, Oregon)
A rare and delicious cheese that is not always readily available. It is only released in late summer and fall. In 2004 it was awarded Best Blue Cheese at the World Cheese Awards in London - the first time in history a U.S. cheese has beaten classics like Stilton and Roquefort. Wrapped in grape leaves, the cheese has a somewhat earthy flavor. It is robust and sometimes meaty.
In 1935 the Vella family, of Sonoma’s Vella Cheese Co., purchased the Rogue Creamery in Central Point, Oregon. After a visit to Roquefort in the fifties, the Vellas started making blue cheese at the creamery. The creamery is now run by new owners who continue the Vella legacy and produce a variety of award-winning cheeses.
